This article will focus solely on the three most common age-based visas listed above.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thailand<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Non-Immigrant O visas <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are often called &#8220;retirement visas&#8221; because of the minimum age requirement of 50. None of them permit employment in Thailand of any kind (for information on work visas, see our<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/btisolutions.co\/work-permit-services-thailand\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">work permit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> page). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You will also see and hear these visas referred to by shortened names: Non O, Non O-A, and Non O-X.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All three require the visa holder to demonstrate financial viability, either by maintaining a minimum balance in a Thai commercial bank or by showing proof of monthly income in Thailand, including pension or social security payments. Two of the three, O-A and O-X, also require proof of qualifying health insurance, covered in detail below.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As with most countries\u2019 immigration procedures, the longer the stay, the more assurances the authorities will want from you in the way of documents and records attesting to your financial stability, good character, and good health. For instance, applying for the initial 90-day term of a Non O visa is a straightforward process through your home country\u2019s Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate website. However, extending these initial 90 days to the full year requires more complicated documentation and processes.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let&#8217;s take a look at which route actually fits your situation.<\/span><\/p><h2><b>Which <\/b><b>Non-Immigrant O Visa Thailand<\/b><b> Route Are You Eligible For?<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The right starting point isn&#8217;t really about which visa sounds best. It&#8217;s about where you are right now and what you already hold.<\/span><\/p><h3><b>Already in Thailand on a Tourist Entry<\/b><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you&#8217;re already in Thailand, you&#8217;re generally not looking at the O-A. You&#8217;re looking at a local conversion to the Non-O, using either Form TM.86 or TM.87, depending on how you entered. TM.86 applies if you entered on a tourist visa; TM.87 applies if you entered visa-exempt (without a visa but with a permitted stay stamp). This is the most common route for retirees already living in Thailand, and it&#8217;s the focus of the section below on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">converting a tourist visa to a Non-Immigrant O Visa in Thailand.<\/span><\/p><h3><b>Applying From Abroad<\/b><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The O-A is where most people who are still in their home country belong. It&#8217;s a full one-year visa issued before you travel, but it comes with a heavier document burden, including a criminal record check, a medical certificate, and mandatory health insurance, none of which the local Non-O conversion requires.<\/span><\/p><h3><b>When O-X Is Even Relevant<\/b><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">O-X is a separate, longer-stay route with stricter qualification logic: a higher financial bar, a narrower list of eligible nationalities, and mandatory Thai-issued insurance. As of the current rule (effective since September 2024, reducing an earlier, much higher requirement), the minimum is 40,000 THB in outpatient coverage and 400,000 THB in inpatient coverage, from a Thai-regulated insurer or, for O-A, a foreign insurer whose coverage meets the same minimums. It is also possible to apply in Thailand at an Immigration Bureau office if you enter the country as a tourist. However, we do not recommend applying in Thailand because it requires additional applications, extensions, and expenses.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Application in your home country should be made at least 15 days prior to your scheduled departure for Thailand. In addition, you should give yourself time to submit your passport to the Thai Embassy or Consulate for the visa stamp. The Thai Immigration Bureau has informed us it is not accepting electronic evidence of visa issuance on arrival, meaning you must have a physical stamp in your passport. You should also check with your local Thai Embassy or Consulate website for the latest fees and processing particulars.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once on the website, you will see a link to a short application and declaration form. Thai Immigration will only accept a visa stamp in a passport and will not accept electronic verification that a Non O visa was issued by an embassy or consulate.<\/span><\/i><\/p><h3><b>Extending the 90-day Non O visa to a full year<\/b><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After arrival in Thailand and completing the current COVID-19 entry requirements (e.g., testing and\/or quarantine), you can focus on extending your 90-day Non O visa to a full year. The first step is to establish your financial resources. This involves opening an account at any Thai commercial bank and depositing THB800,000. You\u2019ll need to maintain this balance for two months before applying for your extension. You can also begin depositing your pension, social security, or other income into your Thai bank account.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have already been in Thailand for a while and have a Thai bank account, there is an alternative to depositing THB800,000 and keeping it there for two months, but it requires planning well in advance. You can establish your financial resources by depositing at least THB65,000 a month for 12 months prior to applying for the visa extension. You can then supply a letter from your bank establishing this deposit history and balance, and get your extension on this basis without needing to tie up THB800,000.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After two months and with your financial resources established, you will be ready to process a one-year extension with the Thai Immigration Bureau main office in Bangkok or the nearest Provincial Immigration Office wherever you reside in Thailand.\u00a0 Because you will be asking to stay in Thailand for an extended time, the Immigration Bureau will look more closely at you and your documents. It\u2019s always helpful for the first extension to confer with someone experienced in the process and, if you don\u2019t speak Thai, to bring someone along who does, particularly if you reside in a more rural province.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s what you\u2019ll need to apply for the Non O visa extension. You&#8217;ll also need a re-entry permit if you ever travel outside Thailand, including trips home.<\/span><\/p><h2><b>Non-Immigrant Visa O<\/b><b>-A <\/b><b>Thailand<\/b><b> (Long Stay)<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The O-A is one of three routes under the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Non Immigrant O Visa Thailand <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">program, and it&#8217;s specifically built for retirees applying from their home country rather than converting locally. You apply for the one-year Non-O-A visa at a Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate before you travel.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because you\u2019re asking to stay in the Kingdom for a full year, you will need to establish your financial resources, good character, and good health before the visa is issued. Your application will also require review and approval from the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bangkok. This process can take six to eight weeks, significantly longer than the Non O application, so plan your travel accordingly.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We advise that you not travel to Thailand until you receive your Non O-A visa stamp in your passport. Thai Immigration will only accept a visa stamp in a passport and will not accept electronic verification that a Non O-A visa was issued by an embassy or consulate.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Annual extensions, 90-day reporting, and the need for re-entry permits are essentially the same as with the Non O visa described above.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are the additional application requirements for a Non-O-A visa:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A certificate from your home country&#8217;s national law enforcement agency (e.g., US FBI) establishing your clean criminal record. You should also have no criminal record in Thailand.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A medical certificate stating that you are free from the following diseases: leprosy, tuberculosis, drug addiction, elephantiasis, and third-phase syphilis.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A health insurance policy valid for one year, meeting the current <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Non-O Retirement Insurance Thailand <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">minimum of 40,000 THB in outpatient coverage and 400,000 THB in inpatient coverage, from either a Thai or foreign insurer whose policy meets the same minimums.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The primary benefit of the Non O-A visa is the initial full-year term. The downsides are the increased time and complexity of the application process, additional expenses for the health and criminal history documents, and the need to be reviewed by two Thai government agencies, with the risk of rejection if your health or criminal history have any blemishes.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re not in a hurry, have an unblemished record, and already have or plan to purchase robust health insurance, this may be the right visa for you. Otherwise, the Non O visa process described above will allow you to get to the Kingdom sooner with less expense and hassle.<\/span><\/p><h2><b>Non-Immigrant Visa O<\/b><b>-X <\/b><b>Thailand<\/b><b> (Extra Long Stay)<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Non O-X visa is a 10-year visa for those aged 50 or older. It is issued for an initial term of five years and can be extended for a second five-year term. It is only available to citizens of Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States. You can apply in your home country through a Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate or in Thailand at the Immigration Bureau. The requirements for demonstrating good character and health are substantially the same as for the Non O-A visa described above. The most important differences are with establishing financial resources.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The financial bar for the Non O-X visa is higher than for the Non O and Non O-A visas. To apply for the Non O-X, you will need to show a balance of THB3,000,000 in a Thai commercial bank. Once in Thailand, you will need to establish financial capability with Thai immigration every year by maintaining a minimum balance of THB1,500,000. Alternatively, you can deposit a monthly income of at least THB150,000 in a Thai commercial bank for one year and then have your bank certify these deposits.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The benefit of O-X is the long five-year term free from annual extensions.
