If you are considering applying for Thailand Permanent Residency (PR), we have an important update about when you may be able to apply. I’ll also cover the basic qualifications and explain why it may make sense for you to begin the application process now.
So, let’s dive in.
Due to recent changes in the government and the pending election, the PR application window did not open at the end of 2025 as expected. However, we now understand that immigration authorities have started meeting with PR candidates, and we anticipate that the application window will open sometime in March.
We expect immigration to accept applications for approximately six to eight weeks once the window opens.
Now, the first question is: would you benefit from obtaining Permanent Residency in Thailand?
Most of our PR clients have worked in Thailand for several years and are planning to stay in the Kingdom for the foreseeable future. They also want the flexibility and security that PR provides, rather than having their stay tied directly to a work visa.
With PR, you can remain in Thailand even if you lose your job, decide to take a break, retire, or start your own business. PR also protects you from the downside risk of losing your employment and then having only seven days to find another long-term visa solution.
In addition, PR can be especially beneficial for applicants whose spouses are not Thai nationals, as spouses may also benefit from being married to a Thailand permanent resident.
So, if you’re interested, the second question is: do you qualify?
You may qualify if you meet these three basic criteria:
First, you must have been working in Thailand for at least three consecutive years under the same visa category. In addition, you must have been employed by your current employer for at least one year at the time you submit your application.
Second, you must have earned at least 80,000 to 100,000 baht per month over the past two years. If you are married to a Thai national, the income requirement is substantially lower.
Third, approximately six to eight months after your application is submitted, you will be interviewed in Thai and expected to demonstrate basic conversational Thai skills.
